On-time timed-token protocol

1 Supported in part by a grant from the Texas Advanced Research Program. Abstract-The token protocols of FDDI and FDDI-M support both synchronous and asynchronous traffic. However, FDDI suffers from a token-lateness problem, and FDDI-M may starve asynchronous traffic. To remove these two weaknesses, we propose the on-time timed-token protocol. Its main feature is the addition of information to the token that allows a station to determine whether the early arrival of a token is due to unused synchronous bandwidth or unused asynchronous bandwidth. We present a synchronous bandwidth allocation scheme for this protocol, and comparison is made against FDDI and FDDI-M.

Cycle-Time Properties of the Timed Token Medium Access Control Protocol
Guaranteeing message deadlines is a key issue in distributed real-time applications. The timed token medium access control (MAC) protocol is suitable for real-time application due to its important timing property of bounded channel access time which provides a necessary condition to ensure that the message deadlines are satissed. The inherent timing properties of the timed token protocol that a...
متن کاملProperties of BuST and Timed-Token Protocols under Local Allocation Schemes
Token passing channel access mechanisms are used in several communication networks. An important class of token passing approaches are the so-called timed token protocols, which are able to manage both real-time traffic and non real-time traffic. Recently, a new token passing protocol, called Budget Sharing Token protocol (BuST), was proposed to improve the existing timed token approaches in te...
متن کاملOn Non-existence of Optimal Local Synchronous Bandwidth Allocation Schemes for the Timed-Token MAC Protocol
Numerous methods have been proposed to integrate real-time and non-real-time services of the timed-token medium access control (MAC) protocol. One of the key issues in tailoring the timed-token protocol for real-time applications is the synchronous band-width allocation (SBA) problem whose objective is to meet both the protocol and deadline constraints. Several non-optimal local SBA schemes and...
متن کاملEMCA — An Optimal Synchronous Bandwidth Allocation Scheme for Guaranteeing Synchronous Message Deadlines with the Timed Token Protocol in an FDDI Network
We investigate the inherent timing properties of the timed token protocol which is necessary to guarantee synchronous message deadlines in a timed token ring network such as FDDI (Fibre Distributed Data Interface) where the timed token medium access control (MAC) protocol is employed. As a result, an exact upper bound, which is tighter than previously published, on the elapse time between any n...
متن کاملOn the Stability of Timed Token Rings
We analyze in this paper the stability of two types of timed-token rings: the existing Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) token ring protocol, and a new variant of the FDDI that we propose. The FDDI supports two classes of traac: synchronous and asynchronous. The time constraint mechanism of FDDI guarantees the transmission delay of synchronous traac: a Target Token Rotation Time (TTRT) be...
